“I have signed a decree establishing as official policy of the United States government that there are only two sexes: male and female.” With these words, Donald Trump, during his inauguration speech on January 20, 2025, announced a bombshell to Americans: by executive order, there are only two sexes—male and female.
Ironically, the feminist Antoinette Fouque titled one of her works There Are Two Sexes (1990), a reminder that one is born either a girl or a boy. Feminists have long fought to ensure that no one forgets that half of humanity is born female. And if we were, as Freud once wrote, to look at the world with fresh eyes, the existence of two sexes in human beings would strike us as self-evident.
