The Haute Autorité de santé wants free access to gender transition for everyone aged 16 and over

EXCLUSIVE - In a draft set of recommendations on trans people, currently under review, the French National Authority for Health is preparing to propose a form of public service for gender transition. This goes against the cautious approach adopted by other European countries.


In 2021, the French Ministry of Solidarity and Health asked the French National Authority for Health (HAS) to give its opinion on the best practices that healthcare professionals should follow with regard to people wishing to undergo a gender transition. To this end, this independent public authority has appointed a panel of experts to study the available scientific data and issue their conclusions, in the form of a document containing recommendations for good practice for doctors and carers. The recommendations cover how to respond to a request for transition, the prescription of ‘gender-affirming’ hormones, gender reassignment surgery and support for trans people.

For the time being, however, the recommendations of the HAS experts, which Le Figaro has obtained, coincide in almost every respect with the demands made by the transactivist associations, to which the HAS working group seems to be very receptive.
